question

Q. What are the different types of open access models and how do they differ?

answer

Answer

There are many different types of open access models. These are more popular ones:

  • Gold Open Access: Authors or their organizations must pay the publisher an article processing fee to publish their work as open access only through the publisher’s website.
  • Green Open Access: A publisher’s open access policy that allows authors an option to publish the pre-print or post-print versions of their work through institutional repositories, personal websites, or subject databases, among other places.
  • You may watch this short video that explains the difference between pre-print and post-print versions.
  • To find a specific journal or publisher’s open access policy, you can use JISC: Open Policy Finder. It will show you the detailed requirements for publishing open access for those individual journals and publishers. If you are unsure, please contact commons@erau.edu for assistance.
  • Hybrid Open Access: A version of Gold Open Access where authors or their organizations must pay the publisher an article processing fees for open access publishing. Within the journal itself, there will be articles that are open access and others that are behind a paywall, unlike a true open access journal where all work is published open access.

Beware of Predatory Publishers! These are illegitimate publishers who exploit authors by soliciting their work, then charge them high publication fees, but offer no editorial oversight or peer-review. To determine if a publisher is predatory, please use the Hunt Library’s Publishing Checklist to assess if a publisher is legitimate.
